Print on Demand

Making print-on-demand artwork with AI

How to generate print-ready designs, keep the resolution correct, and turn each one into a listing video without hiring a designer.

Where AI actually helps a POD store

Print-on-demand is a numbers game. You list many designs, most of them do nothing, and a handful carry the whole store. For years the bottleneck was the art itself, because paying a designer per design makes wide testing impossible. AI moves that bottleneck. You describe a design and get it back in seconds.

Figgshield is an MCP server your AI agent talks to at https://api.figgshield.ai/mcp. That means you generate from inside Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, or ChatGPT Developer Mode, instead of switching to a separate app and copying files around.

Getting print resolution right

Screen art and print art are not the same thing. A file that looks crisp on a product page can turn to mush on an 11x14 poster. Figgshield's image model, Nano Banana 2, renders at 1K, 2K, or 4K. For a t-shirt chest print or a mug wrap, 2K is usually plenty. For posters, canvas, and large-format work, generate at 4K.

Credits scale with size: 8 credits at 1K or 2K, and 16 credits at 4K. So the rule is simple. Match the resolution to the physical product, and do not pay for 4K on a design that will only ever print four inches wide.

Plan for the background too. Most print providers want a transparent or cleanly cut subject for direct-to-garment printing. Ask for a centered subject on a plain background you can knock out, or one built to sit on a specific shirt color.

Prompts that turn into products people buy

Vague prompts give you vague art. 'A cat' is a coin flip. 'A line-art tabby cat with round glasses, thick black strokes, transparent background, centered, lots of negative space' gives you something you can actually list. The detail is the difference.

Sellable POD art usually has a hook: a pun, a niche identity, an inside joke a community recognizes. Think plant mom, sourdough obsessed, night shift nurse. Feed the identity and the visual style as separate parts of the prompt so the model gets both right.

Iterate cheaply. Generate a batch at 1K to judge composition, pick the winner, then regenerate only that one at 4K for the print file. You are not paying a designer for revisions, so treat the first ten outputs as sketches.

From a flat design to a listing video

Static mockups are the baseline now. A short motion clip on your listing or in your ads holds attention longer. Figgshield can animate an image you already generated: pass the image id to the video step and it becomes the first frame, so your product stays on-model instead of drifting into something new.

Video runs on Kling 3, with a faster Kling 3 Turbo tier for quick drafts. A five-second clip is 35 credits. That buys one clip of a mug slowly rotating on a wooden table, or a tote bag catching the light, ready to drop into a reel.

What it costs to test a niche

Here is the calculation that used to stop people from testing. A freelance designer might charge fifty dollars a design, so a ten-design niche test runs five hundred dollars before you know whether anyone wants it. Generating the same ten concepts at 2K is 8 credits each, and you pay the model price with no markup added on top.

That changes how you work. Instead of betting big on one polished design, you can float twenty rough concepts, cut eighteen, and only spend the 4K rate of 16 credits on the two that earn it. Images and video draw from one credit balance, so the same pool covers your listing clips.

The only thing Figgshield earns on is credits you buy and never spend, which is a reason to top up modestly and often rather than sitting on a big balance. See pricing and credits for the details.

Setting it up, and where your files go

There is no free tier. You start on a paid Pro trial that runs 7 days and includes 150 credits, for $5, which is enough to judge whether the workflow fits your store. Cancel before it renews and you pay nothing more.

Connect the server to any MCP agent: Claude desktop and Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, or ChatGPT in Developer Mode on a paid plan. Point it at https://api.figgshield.ai/mcp and generate from the same window where you plan your listings.

Generated files sit on a private link for 7 days and are then deleted, so download your print files as you go. A reference image you send, such as a style board or a rough sketch, is used in memory only and never stored.
